Happy birthday Bob Dylan - gig

27/05/11
The Caravan Music Club has evolved from Peter Foley hosting gigs in his home and then the Oakleigh Bowling Club until now using the Oakleigh RSL. Many of Mlebourne's finest have gigged for Peter and the club and it continues to attract crowds in the intimate surroundings on offer. Artists enjoy playing for the club as they know that they will get an appreciative audience who want to hear them.

To celebrate Bob's 70th birthday, the Caravan Music Club arranged a special gig where various local acts would sing Dylan songs. Knowing that all the songs would be good and seeing who the artists werre, it couldn't fail at being a good gig. As it turned out, it was better than that - it was superb.

Obviously I don't need to talk too much about who Bob Dylan is or what he has contributed to music and words. The man has written more classics than most and has influenced so many of the artists that we have seen over the years.

This birthday gig featured a house band of Ash Naylor on guitar, Bruce Haymes on keyboards, Bill MacDonald on bass and Matt Cotter on drums. I have seen Ash on a number of occasions; his own gigs, as part of the RockWiz Orchestra and supporting other acts. I've seen Bruce play with many people too like Paul Kelly, Renee Geyer and Vika and Linda. Ash was a star at this gig and I don't think I've ever seen Bruce enjoy himself so much.

The play list was:

Ashley Naylor

Love Minus Zero - No Limit and All Along The Watchtower

Ash performed superbly and his enthusiasm and talent were clear for all.

Charles Jenkins

Things Have Changed and Visions of Johanna

When I first went to a gig and saw Chuck play, I was taken with how good his voice was. On the whole, it seems to me that women can have amazing voices whereas men can have a good voice. Chuck has one of the best and his performance tonight made me think that he might be Bob Dylan's son - that would explain why he played so well.

Joe Camilleri

Just Like A Woman, I Shall Be Released and Gotta Serve Somebody Joe can always be relied on to provide a good performance and he rarely strays too far from where a song starts from. It is enjoyable watching him though there is nothing too special that he does.

Lisa Miller

You're a Big Girl Now and Maggies Farm

I've seen Lisa and few times and sometimes I haven't really got her - but this night, she was great.

Shane Howard

No Dark Yet and Highway 61

I have seen Shane many times over the years, mostly when he's been playing with Archie Roach. He works some great magic and has things to say. Seeing him at this gig was strange as he was just playing good songs well - no message or meaning of his own - just a good musician plying his trade.

Stephen Cummings

Rita May and Love Sick

Stephen is a throwback to the 70s and was in his element. I've seen him a few times, sometimes gentle and sometimes manic. He put on a great show that was almost punk but still true to the original songs. Great to have him on the bill.

Suzannah Espie

Blowing In The Wind and I'll Be Your Baby Tonight

Suzannah was one of the first artists that I heard in Melbourne when I saw her in the group Git and I have followed her since then. She put in a great show and held the audience in her hands.

Van Walker

Don't Think Twice It's Alright and It's All Over Now Baby Blue

I've never seen or heard him before - but he was great and somebody I will look out for again.

Vika and Linda

Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking, If Not For You and Subterranean Homesick Blues

I am obviously biased towards Viak and Linda as they are friends of mine, but they were wonderful on the night and did great versions of their songs - I particularly enjoyed Vikas version of Subterranean Homesick Blues - very entertaining.

  Adventure Spirit

It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry

Four young lads who were superb - I don't know what their usual stuff is like, but I'll check it out.

  Myra Howard

Ring Them Bells

Shane's daughter did a fair version of this song.

Tracey Miller, Loretta Miller and Andy Baylor

All The Tired Horses / Make You Feel My Love

I've seen Andy a few times, but I hadn't heard of the sisters. They gave it their all and weren't too bad.

  the band

Mighty Quinn

A good singalong for the band and the audience

  everyone

Like a Rolling Stone

So to sum up the evening, it was a collection of great songs performed by extremely talented people who all seemed to be enjoying themselves as much as the audience. the crowd loved it and there was a lot of singing along that seemed very appropriate. A great night was had by all.
