Simon & Garfunkel

In 1983 I went to see Simon & Garfunkel perform at Wembley Stadium. It remains one of the greatest gigs I have been to. This is partly due to the quality of the music and vocals but mainly because I had grown up hearing their stuff and never expecting to see them - it seemed a bit weird that after all those years (ok, I was only 22) I was actually going to see them perform - and to be amongst so many people when I did was superb. If you have seen/heard the 'Live at Central Park' DVD/CD, then the gig that I went to was pretty similar to that.

Anyway, they were over here doing their Old Friends tour and I went to see them tonight at the Rod Laver Arena. Once again, it was a great gig. Yes, they are both 68 years old and their voices aren't what they were, but they played all the old favourites and kept the versions pretty much as they originally were. This was a challenge, particularly for Art Garfunkel who has all the high and long notes to produce and to his credit, he hit everyone of them - admittedly he didn't have any power when he reached them, but he reached them. And their harmonies were still there.

I was concerned with how the show might have gone and whether it would leave me regretting going to see them, but I didn't need to worry. I wondered whether their memories might have faded and instead of remembering that there are fifty ways to leave your lover, they may only remember a couple of them. But all was good and I had good seats so am a happy lad.

Below is a photo from the gig but my new camera turns out to be worse than my old one - shame
